Pirate Brew 9/5: Big Blocks

Today, we're congratulating Carlia Northcross for breaking the blocking record in volleyball.

Good morning. Back to work and running late? Don’t even worry about it. It’s National Be Late For Something Day, so truly, you are celebrating correctly.

What else are we mixing into today's Brew?

🏐 Record breaker, tournament winner
⚽️ Win streak: 4
🏴‍☠️ And much, much more!

🔼 Tourney Things. The women’s volleyball team took another tournament W, ending the Pirate Invitational 2-1. After beating Campbell in three sets, they ran it back and did the same to Bethune-Cookman. The Pirates had 47 kills, a .385 hitting percentage, and went 9-9 in siding out in the second set.

The final match against Appalachian State was a challenge after playing five hard-fought sets. The Mountaineers won the first set, and ECU won the next two. What could’ve been the final and winning set for the Pirates went into extra points, and the Mountaineers ended up with the win at 27-25. The fifth set was also won by just two points, and the Mountaineers took the win.

Among all three matches, one record was broken, and one was tied. Carlia Northcross is now the official record holder for the most individual blocks in a single match in ECU history. The team tied the school record for the most blocks in a match with 19 total blocks.

Catch the Pirates match against Norfolk on Friday, Sept. 8, in the Hampton Inn and Suites Seahawk Classic.

🔼 Flaming Four. Unfortunately, the soccer team's shutout streak is over, but the win streak is still on a roll. The team has a four-game win streak after beating High Point 3-1.

Lindsey Aiken took the first goal, and Ella Steck shot the second of the game. It was also Steck's second game in a row with a goal. High Point got one pass in the second half, but so did Jazmin Ferguson for the Pirates.

Watch the women strive for a five-game win streak at the next match against Duke on Thursday, Sept. 7.
