Pirate Brew 3/31: Weekend Warriors
Today, we're gearing up for a big weekend.
Good morning! Our pens are running out of ink this morning as we started writing down everything that’s going on with East Carolina this weekend. It’s going to be busy.
If MLB Opening Day got you all fired up for some baseball, you’re in luck. The Pirates have a big series at Houston this weekend. Got The Masters circled on your calendar next week? How about warming up with some ECU men’s golf at the Cutter Creek Intercollegiate?
What all are we mixing into today's Brew?

📈 STOCK UP
🔼 Weekend Warriors. No. 8 East Carolina baseball (19-6) travels to Houston (12-13) this weekend to start AAC play, hoping to jumpstart another conference championship campaign.
The Pirates have been unbeatable on weekends over the past month, sweeping three-game sets against Liberty, Missouri State, and George Mason. And the Pirates pitching staff has given up just 13 runs over those nine games. (For those keeping track at home, that’s 1.4 earned runs per game. Whew.)
Despite the losing record, Houston has been playing better ball of late. The Cougars have won seven of their last nine, including a sweep of Minnesota in Minneapolis.
🔼 Go The Distance. The Bill Carson Invitational kicks off today at the Bate Foundation Track & Field Facility, with East Carolina hosting the event. The Pirates will be welcoming athletes from The Citadel, UNCW, Mount Olive, and Appalachian State. A few athletes to keep an eye on this weekend…
Alex Sawyer will be running the 800m on the men’s side. Last time out, Sawyer ran a 3:50.83 in the 1,500m, good for sixth in program history.
Chase Osborne, who holds the program record in the 5,000m, will run the 1,500m this weekend.
Jasmine Jenkins put herself fourth in the ECU record books with a 59.82m hammer throw last time out. She will look to improve on that distance this weekend.
🔼 Sword Fight. The East Carolina softball squad (22-12) hosts the UCF Knights (20-18) this weekend for a three-game set, tipping off the home conference season for the Pirates.
Taylor Edwards will look to carry her hot bat into the weekend. The grad student was 4-for-4 earlier this week against UNC, and her .398 batting average is fourth in the AAC.
UCF comes into the weekend battle-tested, with seven of its last eight games coming against ranked opponents. The Knights finished that stretch 3-5.
🔼 Hot Irons. East Carolina’s women’s golf team finished fifth at the Golfweek/AGT Intercollegiate at the Caledonia Golf and Fish Club.
The Pirates battled against a 17-team field at the event, carding a 39-over 891 (298-302-291) in the three-day event.
Marta Perez led the Pirates with a 2-over 215, good for a tie for fifth. Oda Sofie Kilsti was right behind Perez with a 4-over 217, placing her 11th overall.
🤔 PIRATES TRIVIA
Pirate Pastime. East Carolina softball went into Chapel Hill on Tuesday and beat the Tarheels on their home dirt for the first time since April 2, 2008.
Quick! Without looking at the boxscore from that day, who was East Carolina’s starting pitcher that day who led the team to a 3-2 win over No. 16 North Carolina?
