Pirate Brew 4/13: Mustache Moolah

Today, we're looking good for a good cause.

Good morning! Pirates and mustaches are like peanut butter and jelly. They just make sense together. The ECU baseball team must agree - they spent the month of March growing theirs out to raise more than $15,000 for ALS NC 👏

What all are we mixing into today's Brew?

🔼 Bearcat Report. The No. 9 Pirate baseball team finishes off its home stand with Cincinnati in Greenville this weekend. So, what’s up with the Bearcats?

Cincinnati is 15-19 overall and 3-3 in the AAC this season. As a team, the Bearcats are hitting .230 and scoring 5.97 runs per game, while pitching to a 6.28 ERA as a staff.

The matchup to watch: The ECU pitching staff vs. Ryan Nicholson. The lefty is hitting .291 on the year with eight home runs and is slugging .567.

🔼 Two Close. East Carolina held leads early in both games of its doubleheader Wednesday at Duke, but ultimately fell in both contests.

Taylor Edwards had a good day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored in game one. Bailee Wilson added a pair of RBI for ECU.

Game two came down to the wire, with Duke walking off with a 4-3 win. Not before Anna Sawyer robbed a potential walkoff home run, though.

A few early season graduations have moved Connor Norby (2B/OF, Baltimore) into the No. 100 spot in MLB.com’s Top 100 Prospect Rankings. Norby joins No. 85 prospect Alec Burleson (OF, St. Louis) and No. 38 prospect Gavin Williams (RHP, Cleveland).

🔼 Climbing Mount Olive. East Carolina track & field travels to Mount Olive this weekend for the Mount Olive Invite, the program’s penultimate event before the AAC Outdoor Championships.

With a little luck, the Pirates will have better weather than their last time out at the Duke Invitational. Rain or shine, ECU will look to continue the momentum they built in Durham, where they grabbed several top-fives and personal bests.

🤔 PIRATES TRIVIA

Traffic Jam. How does East Carolina baseball win all these games? We could point to plenty of reasons, but one is the constant line of hitters getting on base.

As a team, what would you guess the Pirates’ on-base percentage is this year?

🎉 TRIVIA ANSWER

Answer: .403!

That number is easily the best in the AAC - Wichita State is second at .382.

Have a great Thursday, y’all.
