Pirate Brew 4/3: Rewriting records

Today, we're giving it up for historic Pirates.

Good morning! Wow, the East Carolina women’s lacrosse team tied the school record for wins in a season over the weekend! What a great way to end the year! Hold on a moment…I’m getting word the team still has five more regular season games.

Better plan on updating the record books!

🔼 Seesaw Series. The No. 8 East Carolina baseball team traveled down to Houston over the weekend, dropping a closely contested series two games to one.

The Pirates lost game one in extra innings 5-4, despite an eight-inning, 13-strikeout start from Trey Yesavage. ECU flipped the script in game two, winning its own 5-4 game. Jacob Starling and Ryan McCrystal both had two-hit efforts in the game.

The deciding game three was just as close, a 6-4 Houston win. Starling produced once again at the plate, hitting a solo shot in the sixth. Luke Nowak gave the Pirates the lead in the seventh with a double to left-center, but Houston grabbed the lead back.

🔼 Shut The ‘Dore. The East Carolina women’s lacrosse team blew past Vanderbilt on Saturday, using seven third quarter goals to win 15-10. The win moved the Pirates to 2-0 in AAC play.

Camryn Pennypacker and Sophia LoCicero both scored four goals for the Pirates, and Brynn Knight recorded 11 saves in net.

East Carolina (9-3) has now tied the program record for wins in a season, with five regular season contests still on the calendar. Next up is a home contest against Cincinnati on April 8.

🔼 Podium Pirates. The Pirates ran wild at the Bill Carson Invitational this past weekend, sweeping the men’s and women’s team titles and winning 24 of the 40 total events.

Lindsay Yentz won the 3,000m steeplechase running away from the field (quite literally), grabbing a PR of 10:57.70, becoming just the third ECU woman under 11 minutes in the event.

The men and women both claimed victory in the triple jump. Freshman Jared Harrell set a PR with a 15.09m jump, good for 10th in school history. L’Nya Carpenter took the women’s title with a 12.69m jump, placing her fourth in school history.

Jasmine Jenkins dominated the women’s hammer throw, becoming just the fourth ECU woman to throw over 60 meters in the event. Her 60.06m throw paced the field by almost six meters.

🔼 Ironwood Ready. East Carolina women’s golf closes out the regular season as it hosts the Ironwood Invitational today and tomorrow.

The Pirates will host 10 other teams for the two-day event at Ironwood Golf and Country Club, a par-72, 6,266 yard course.

East Carolina routinely plays well at Ironside, winning the ECU Easter Invitational in 2021 with a team score of 888, and finishing fourth at last year’s Ironwood Invitational, with a scorecard of 872.

🤔 PIRATES TRIVIA

Punchout Pirates. East Carolina’s Trey Yesavage was excellent yet again in his Friday night start against Houston.

Yesavage’s 13 strikeouts in six innings were the most by a Pirate pitcher since…?

We like our Brew hot n’ fresh. But we’re not opposed to you reheating your cup. Here’s some news you may have missed recently…

🏴‍☠️ Passion Project: A pair of East Carolina alums created a musical premiering this summer and are bringing some of the numbers to Greenville with help from current students. “SCOUTS” is an original musical about gender, inclusivity, and Mothman.

🏴‍☠️ Pirate Profiles: Cal Christian, chair of the College of Business’ Department of Accounting, knew early on that Linda Quick would make a great professor. After graduating from ECU with a combined Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and Master of Science in Accounting in 2005, Quick started at an accounting firm. She eventually made her way back to East Carolina, though.
